How should I prepare my site before build day?

Do I need to call 811 before site preparation?
Yes. The homeowner should coordinate 811 utility marking before any digging, excavation, grading, or site work begins. This is a legal requirement in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, and it is the homeowner's responsibility — not the builder's.
811 marking covers public utility lines but does not cover private utilities. Invisible dog fences, private lighting lines, irrigation systems, natural gas grill lines, drainage pipes, and homeowner-installed electrical must be disclosed separately before any site work begins. These are not marked by 811.
What is the best surface for a shed foundation?
A well-drained, properly prepared and compacted gravel base is the most practical foundation direction for most backyard structures because it actively supports drainage and reduces moisture contact with the foundation beams. Do I need to be home during the build?
You do not need to be present for every hour of the build, but someone with authority to make decisions should be available at two critical moments: placement confirmation at the start, and the final walkthrough at completion.
Once the foundation is set and framing begins, changes to placement become extremely difficult and expensive. Placement confirmation at the start of build day is not optional.
What happens during the final walkthrough?

What are the structural specifications for a Vintage Shed Company build?
Every Vintage Shed Company structure is built to the following baseline specifications:
Wall sheathing is 1/2" pressure-treated sheathing. OSB is never used in any application — not for the subfloor, not for wall sheathing, not anywhere in a Vintage Shed Company structure.
Why is OSB never used in the floor or walls?
OSB — oriented strand board — absorbs moisture at the edges and corners, swells, and loses structural integrity over time in backyard structure applications where seasonal humidity, splash-back, and temperature cycling are constant factors. The subfloor is a load-bearing structural element that will be walked on, loaded with equipment, and exposed to whatever the building's use demands. What roofing is used on a standard build?

The structure must be fully painted within 30 days of completion to maintain warranty coverage. Primer is not a substitute for a finished exterior paint application.
Does my shed come painted?
Every Vintage Shed Company structure built on LP SmartSide® siding comes professionally primed from the factory — not painted. The factory-applied primer is a light beige base coat designed for long-term paint adhesion. It is an intermediate step, not a finished exterior.
You have two options: add the Professional Painting Service to your build, or paint the structure yourself within 30 days of completion. Either path must be completed within that 30-day window to maintain warranty coverage.
Failure to complete a full exterior paint application within 30 days of installation voids warranty coverage on the siding. This is not a suggestion — it is a written warranty condition.
What is included in the Professional Painting Service?

If I paint it myself, what are my responsibilities?
If you choose to paint the structure yourself, the following steps are required to maintain warranty coverage and protect the siding long-term:
- Paint all exposed surfaces within 30 days of installation completion
- Paint all exposed edges, including the bottom edges of every siding panel — this is where moisture infiltration begins if left unfinished
- Paint all six sides of each door — not just the face
- Use premium 100% acrylic latex exterior paint — satin or semi-gloss finish is recommended
- Fill nail holes and knots with exterior wood filler or putty before painting
- Caulk all seams, joints, and trim connections with acrylic latex caulk before painting
