All wood siding — whether factory‑primed or unprimed — must receive a complete exterior finish within 30 days. Primer alone is not a finished coating. Unprimed wood left exposed has no temporary protection at all. Only Georgia Pacific vinyl siding is exempt from the 30‑day finish requirement.

We offer six exterior siding options. Each arrives in a different finish state, which determines what you need to do after the build is complete:
Pre‑Primed (factory primer applied — needs paint):
- LP SmartSide® Lap Siding — engineered wood with a horizontal lap profile. Arrives with a uniform light beige factory primer applied during manufacturing. Requires two coats of 100% acrylic latex paint within 30 days.
- LP SmartSide® Vertical Siding — engineered wood with a vertical panel profile. Same factory primer and same 30‑day paint requirement as the lap siding.

Factory‑Finished (no painting required):

Why does my shed need to be finished within 30 days — and what happens if I do not?
This is the single most important maintenance requirement for any wood‑sided Vintage Shed Company structure, and it is rooted in material science, not arbitrary policy.
For LP SmartSide® sidings (pre‑primed): The factory primer is a temporary base coat — not a weatherproof finish. LP SmartSide® is treated with SmartGuard® technology for resistance to moisture, decay, and termites, but that protection depends on a sealed exterior. Left exposed beyond 30 days, the primer deteriorates from UV exposure and moisture cycling. Once that happens, the topcoat will not bond correctly, and moisture can penetrate the substrate at cut edges, nail penetrations, and panel joints.
For DuraTemp and Pine T&G sidings (unprimed): There is no factory coating providing even temporary protection. Here is exactly what needs to happen within that 30‑day window for all wood‑sided structures:

- Apply two coats of premium exterior 100% acrylic latex paint — satin or semi‑gloss finish — to all exterior siding, trim, and door faces.
- Paint all exposed edges of every siding panel, including the bottom edges. This is where moisture enters first.
- Paint all six sides of every door — front, back, top, bottom, and both edges. Unpainted door edges are one of the most common sources of premature wood swelling.

DuraTemp and Pine T&G (unprimed): These sidings have no coating at all. Leaving bare wood exposed is not a matter of "how long before it fails" — it is failing from the moment rain hits it. Uncoated wood absorbs moisture, swells, stains, and begins decaying within weeks. This is the fastest path to structural damage and voided coverage.
Georgia Pacific vinyl siding: This is the one exception. Vinyl arrives factory‑finished and requires no painting at any point. If you want a zero‑maintenance exterior, vinyl is the siding to choose.
For all wood‑sided structures: the structure must be finished within 30 days of completion. If painting yourself is not feasible in that window, add our professional paint service and we will handle it as part of the build.
Can The Vintage Shed Company paint my structure for me?
Yes. We offer a professional exterior painting service on every wood‑sided structure we build on‑site.
When you add our paint service, we handle caulking and painting as part of the build — so your structure is fully finished and weather‑sealed before we leave your property. For unprimed sidings like DuraTemp and Pine T&G, we apply the primer coat as well. Paint is sold separately from the structure cost, and you select your colors after purchase.
If you would rather handle the painting yourself or hire your own painter, that works too. We will provide the spec sheet with finish requirements specific to your siding type so whoever paints it does it right.

Our paint service covers everything needed to properly seal and finish your structure's exterior:
- Primer coat (for unprimed sidings only) — DuraTemp and Pine T&G sidings receive a full exterior primer application before topcoating. LP SmartSide® sidings already have factory primer and skip this step.
- Caulking of all critical joints, seams, and panel connections with acrylic latex caulk — the first line of defense against moisture intrusion.
- Two coats of 100% acrylic exterior latex paint applied to all exterior siding, trim, and door faces.
- Your choice of up to two colors — one for siding, one for trim — selected from our 16‑color palette. Colors are chosen after purchase so you can take your time matching your home.

Can I paint my shed to match my house exactly?
Yes — and this is one of the strongest arguments for choosing a custom on‑site builder over a factory‑finished catalog shed.
If you know your home's exterior paint color, including brand, color name, and sheen, we can either match it from our standard palette or source the exact color as a custom match for the $120 custom color fee. This applies to all wood‑sided structures. For vinyl siding, color selection is made from the manufacturer's available colors at the time of order.
If you do not know your home's exact color, here is how to find out:
- Check your records from when the house was last painted. The original paint receipt or color specification may list the brand and color code.
- Take a clean, fist‑sized paint chip from a protected area, such as under a soffit or behind a downspout, to your local Sherwin‑Williams, Benjamin Moore, or PPG store. They can scan and match it.

Use a high‑quality exterior 100% acrylic latex paint for all wood‑sided structures. This paint type is recommended by LP for SmartSide® siding and performs equally well over primed DuraTemp and Pine T&G surfaces. Here is why it matters:
- Acrylic latex is flexible. It expands and contracts with temperature swings without cracking — critical in the Greater Cincinnati climate, where summer‑to‑winter temperature swings exceed 100°F.
- It breathes. Engineered wood sidings like LP SmartSide® and DuraTemp need to release trace moisture through the coating. Acrylic latex allows this. Oil‑based paints and solid‑body stains do not, and can trap moisture against the substrate.
- It bonds to both factory primer and field‑applied primer. Whether your siding arrived pre‑primed or you applied primer yourself, acrylic latex topcoats are the correct chemistry.
For unprimed sidings (DuraTemp and Pine T&G): Before topcoating, apply one coat of high‑quality exterior acrylic latex primer. The primer seals the bare wood, provides a uniform surface for the topcoat, and improves adhesion. Do not skip this step — paint applied directly to bare wood will not bond correctly and will fail prematurely.
Finish: Satin or semi‑gloss. Both offer UV resistance and shed water effectively. Semi‑gloss is slightly more durable and easier to clean; satin has a softer appearance. Either works.

Do not paint or prime the back side of engineered wood siding panels (LP SmartSide® and DuraTemp). The composite material needs to breathe from behind. LP's installation instructions are explicit on this point.
What caulk should I use, and where does it go?
Use exterior‑grade acrylic latex caulk — it is waterproof, paintable, and flexible enough to handle seasonal expansion and contraction. Silicone caulk is not recommended because it does not accept paint.
Caulking requirements apply to all wood‑sided structures regardless of siding type. Caulk these areas before painting:
- All vertical seams where siding panels meet each other.
- All horizontal lap joints where upper and lower panels overlap (LP SmartSide® Lap and Board & Batten profiles).

If you have opted for our professional paint service, all caulking is included and completed before the first coat of paint goes on.
For vinyl‑sided structures: Caulking of trim connections and penetrations is completed during construction. No additional caulking by the homeowner is required.
When is the best time of year to paint my shed?
The ideal painting window comes down to three conditions: temperature, humidity, and rain.
- Temperature: Between 50°F and 85°F is the sweet spot for acrylic latex paint. Below 50°F, the paint will not cure properly — it stays soft and will not bond. Above 85°F in direct sun, it dries too fast and can crack or blister.
- Humidity: Below 70% relative humidity is ideal. High humidity slows drying and can cause the paint to sag or develop a hazy finish.
- Rain: No rain in the forecast for at least 24 hours after application — 48 hours is safer. Paint can feel dry to the touch long before it is fully cured. Rain on uncured paint causes streaking, adhesion failure, and wasted effort.
In the Greater Cincinnati area, the best painting windows are typically mid‑April through mid‑June and September through mid‑October. Mid‑summer works if you paint in the morning before direct sun hits the walls and temperatures peak.
If your structure is completed during a bad weather window: The 30‑day finish requirement still applies. If conditions are marginal, prioritize sealing all exposed edges, bottom siding edges, and door edges first — these are the most vulnerable points. For unprimed sidings, getting at least the primer coat on immediately is critical. Then complete the full topcoat application as soon as conditions allow.
How much paint will I need for my shed?
That depends on the model size and whether your siding requires primer, but here is a practical guide.
A gallon of quality exterior acrylic latex paint covers approximately 350 to 400 square feet per coat on smooth‑to‑lightly‑textured surfaces. You will need two topcoats. If your siding is unprimed (DuraTemp or Pine T&G), add one coat of primer to the total.
Rough topcoat estimates by structure size (two coats, all sides, trim, and doors):
- 8×10 to 10×12: 2 to 3 gallons total.
- 10×16 to 12×16: 3 to 5 gallons total.

What kind of paint should I use on the floor?
Your floor requires a different product than your walls. The floor sees direct foot traffic, equipment weight, moisture from shoes and tools, and potential chemical exposure from stored yard equipment.
For general storage use: Exterior porch and floor paint. This is formulated for horizontal surfaces that take foot traffic and resist scuffing. Apply two coats for maximum durability.
For heavy‑duty use, including mower storage, gas‑powered equipment, or workshop use: Garage floor paint or epoxy‑based floor coating. These products resist gasoline, oil, and chemical spills that would break down standard porch paint.
Your floor is built with 3/4″ seven‑ply pressure‑treated plywood over 2×6 pressure‑treated joists — a structural floor system that can handle the coating. Make sure the floor is clean and dry before application.
Note: Floor painting is not included in our professional paint service, regardless of siding type. This is a homeowner task best done after your belongings are organized and you know the traffic pattern.
Should I paint the interior of my shed?
It is not required for warranty compliance, but it is a smart move — especially if you plan to use the structure for anything beyond basic storage.
For storage sheds: The interior walls are functional as‑is. If you want a cleaner look, a single coat of a basic latex primer or interior paint brightens the space and makes it easier to spot leaks or moisture early.
For workshops, studios, or she‑sheds: Paint the interior walls with a quality interior latex paint. Light, neutral colors maximize natural light from windows and make the space feel larger. Can I stain my shed instead of painting it?
The answer depends on your siding type.
LP SmartSide® sidings (Lap, Vertical, Board & Batten): We recommend paint over stain, and LP's own finishing guidelines align with this recommendation. LP SmartSide® has a resin‑saturated overlay and factory‑applied primer specifically designed for acrylic latex paint adhesion. Semi‑transparent stains do not bond the same way and will not provide the same moisture protection as a full paint film. Solid‑body stains are closer to paint in performance, but they still do not offer the same mil thickness as two coats of quality acrylic latex.
Roseburg DuraTemp siding: DuraTemp is an engineered wood panel that performs best with a paint system (primer plus two topcoats). Semi‑transparent stain is not recommended. A solid‑body stain is an acceptable alternative if you prefer the stain aesthetic, but two coats of acrylic latex paint over primer provides superior long‑term protection.
American Lumber Pine T&G siding: Natural pine is the one siding option where a high‑quality exterior stain can work well. If you want to showcase the natural wood grain, a penetrating exterior oil stain or a semi‑transparent stain formulated for softwood can provide both protection and a natural aesthetic. Georgia Pacific vinyl siding: Not applicable — vinyl is factory‑finished and should not be painted or stained.

How often will I need to repaint my shed?
Repaint frequency depends on your siding type, paint quality, color choice, and exposure conditions.
LP SmartSide® sidings (painted): With a proper initial paint job — two coats of quality 100% acrylic latex over properly caulked and sealed surfaces — expect 5 to 7 years before a full repaint is needed. In protected locations, such as shaded areas sheltered from prevailing wind, you may get closer to 10 years.
DuraTemp siding (painted): Similar to LP SmartSide® — 5 to 7 years for a full repaint cycle, provided the primer and topcoat were applied correctly and caulk is maintained.
Pine T&G siding (painted): Natural pine is more porous than engineered wood and may require a repaint every 4 to 6 years, particularly on south‑ and west‑facing walls. If stained instead of painted, expect to restain every 2 to 4 years.
Georgia Pacific vinyl siding: No repainting required. Vinyl is maintenance‑free for the life of the material. An occasional rinse with a garden hose removes dirt and pollen.

- South‑ and west‑facing walls take the most UV punishment and will fade and chalk first. These walls may need a maintenance coat 1 to 2 years before the rest of the structure.

Why do you not use OSB anywhere in your structures?
Because OSB fails the one test that matters most for a backyard structure: what happens when it gets wet.
OSB is made by gluing together thin wood strands in alternating layers under heat and pressure. It is strong when dry, but moisture at an exposed edge, nail hole, or imperfectly sealed joint can cause swelling and delamination. Once that process starts, the panel does not return to its original dimensions or strength.
In a backyard structure, moisture can eventually find a pathway through driven rain, window frames, condensation, ground splash, or wall cavities. If OSB is behind the siding, every penetration point becomes a potential failure site.
We use 1/2″ pressure-treated plywood for wall sheathing and 3/4″ seven-ply pressure-treated plywood for floor decking. Plywood is cross-laminated, dimensionally stable, and far more appropriate for a building designed to last.

It happens — and it is not always the end of the conversation.
Start by requesting the specific reasons for denial in writing. Most HOA denials fall into one of these categories: size, placement, materials, color, or roof style. Once you know the exact objection, you have options:
- Modify the design: Because we build custom on-site, we can often adjust dimensions, siding profile, roof pitch, or color to address the Architectural Review Committee’s concern without starting from scratch.
- Request a variance: Many HOAs have a formal appeal or variance process. A well-documented resubmission — especially one showing how the modified design complements the home and neighborhood — carries real weight.
- Meet with the committee directly: Some committees respond better to a face-to-face conversation than a paper application. We can provide updated spec sheets and model renderings to support your case.

Will I need a separate electrical permit if I want power in my shed?
Yes. Electrical work requires its own permit and its own inspection — completely separate from the building permit for the structure itself.
This applies to any electrical connection: outlets, lighting, a subpanel, dedicated circuits for tools, or HVAC equipment. In Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, the electrical work must be performed by a licensed electrician, and the electrician typically pulls the electrical permit on your behalf.
Important: The Vintage Shed Company does not perform electrical work and does not provide licensed electricians. Our scope covers the structure itself — framed, sheathed, sided, and roofed to a standard that is ready for your electrician to work inside.
We leave designated wall cavities accessible for future wiring when requested. Plan the electrical scope before your build, not after. If you know you want power, tell us during the design phase so we can coordinate wall access points and any structural provisions your electrician will need.
Does the type of foundation affect the permit process?
It can — and this is an area where our on-site build approach works in your favor.
Our standard foundation is 6×6 YellaWood® pressure-treated grade beams set on a prepared gravel pad with a moisture barrier. Most Tri-State jurisdictions classify this as a non-permanent foundation, which carries fewer permitting requirements than a poured concrete slab or frost-depth footings.
Here is how foundation type typically affects the permit process:
- Non-permanent foundations: Grade beams, skids, and gravel pads are generally subject to standard accessory-structure permit rules. Fewer inspections. Simpler application.
- Permanent foundations: Concrete slabs, poured footings, and frost-depth piers trigger stricter requirements in most jurisdictions — including footing inspections, potential engineer involvement, and higher fees. In Hamilton County, structures on permanent foundations within 6 feet of another structure require a building permit regardless of size.
- Frost-depth footings: Some jurisdictions require footings below the frost line, 32 inches in the Cincinnati area, for structures over a certain size or on permanent foundations.
Always include your foundation plan when applying for a permit. We provide foundation specifications for every model so your application is complete from the start.
Do I need a permit to replace an existing shed?
In most cases, yes — even if the new shed occupies the same footprint as the old one.
Municipalities treat a replacement shed as new construction, not a repair. Your building department will want to confirm the new structure meets current codes, setback requirements, and zoning rules — which may have changed since the original shed was built or placed.
If the original shed was unpermitted, which is common with older properties, replacing it is actually an opportunity to get the property into compliance. Some jurisdictions are more accommodating with replacement permits when the homeowner is proactively addressing an existing non-conforming structure.
Before demolishing the old shed, contact your building department to confirm what is required. Some jurisdictions want the old structure removed before they will issue a permit for the new one. Others want to see both the demolition plan and the new construction plan together.
What size shed can I build without a permit?
This varies by jurisdiction, and in the Tri-State area the thresholds range significantly:
- City of Cincinnati: 100 square feet, the strictest threshold in the region.
- Hamilton County unincorporated: 200 square feet.
- Ohio state default: 200 square feet.

The practical impact varies. A small storage shed on a gravel pad may have minimal effect. A larger, higher-spec structure with electrical service and finished interior could be assessed at a higher value.
Kentucky and Indiana have similar reporting requirements, though thresholds and enforcement vary by county.

Do I need a zoning permit even if I do not need a building permit?
In most Tri-State jurisdictions, yes. This is one of the most commonly misunderstood points in the entire permit process.
A building permit confirms the structure meets construction codes — framing, materials, and structural integrity. A zoning permit or zoning certificate confirms the structure complies with land-use rules — setbacks, lot coverage, placement, and allowed use.
Many jurisdictions require a zoning certificate for any new accessory structure regardless of size — even when the building permit is waived. In Columbus, Ohio, for example, a zoning permit is required for sheds even when no building permit is needed. Several Hamilton County townships operate the same way.
Ask this exact question: “Do I need a zoning certificate or zoning permit in addition to — or instead of — a building permit?” That one question prevents the most common compliance mistake homeowners make.
Can I convert my shed into a home office, studio, or workshop later?
The short answer: that depends on your local zoning code, and it almost always triggers additional permits and requirements.
A structure permitted as a storage shed is classified as an accessory storage building. Converting it to occupied use — a home office, art studio, workshop, or she-shed with climate control — changes the classification and typically requires:
- A change-of-use permit or revised zoning approval.
- Electrical permit and licensed electrical work for outlets, lighting, subpanel, or HVAC circuit.
- Compliance with egress requirements, including window size and placement for emergency exit.

What to know before build day so your structure starts on the right ground.
A premium backyard structure begins before the first beam is set. This FAQ explains how to choose the right location, prepare the site, handle slope, plan drainage, understand foundation options, call 811, and avoid day-of delays.

Every Vintage Shed Company structure is built entirely on your property using 6×6 YellaWood® pressure-treated ground-contact grade beams over a 10-mil moisture barrier membrane. We do not deliver pre-built sheds, crane buildings over fences, or compromise the structure for transport.
The better the site is prepared, the better the finished building performs for decades.
How should I prepare my site before build day?
Good site preparation is the foundation of a good foundation. The work you do — or hire someone to do — before our crew arrives directly affects the quality and longevity of your structure.
- Clear the build area completely. Remove debris, brush, rocks, stumps, and vegetation from the footprint. The cleared area should extend at least 3 feet beyond the structure on all sides. For structures over 160 square feet, extend that clearance to 4 feet.
- Level the site within 6 inches. The build area needs to be within 6 inches of level, measured from the highest point to the lowest, both front-to-back and side-to-side. We level up to 6 inches using treated leveling materials at no additional charge.
- Check overhead and perimeter clearances. You need at least 3 feet of clearance around all sides of the structure, including above. Power lines and tree branches should clear the roof peak by at least 3 feet, or 4 feet for structures over 160 square feet.
- Mark the corners and door location. Place four stakes at the corners and a fifth stake at the center of the door opening.
- Ensure power access within 150 feet. Our tools run on electricity. If there is no outlet within 150 feet, we will need to bring a generator, which adds a $150 fee.
- Clear a materials path. Our crew carries building materials by hand from the access point to the build site. The path must be clear, walkable, and practical for long lumber.
- Call 811 before you dig. This free service is required before ground work so underground gas, electric, water, cable, fiber, and other utilities can be marked.

Can I choose where the shed goes in my yard?
You choose the location. We help you confirm it works.
Here is what to consider when selecting your site:
- Setback requirements: Most jurisdictions in the Tri-State area require sheds to be set back 3 to 5 feet from side and rear property lines. Some areas require more.
- Underground utilities: Call 811 at least 48 hours before ground work so underground lines can be marked.
- Drainage: Choose a location where water drains away from the structure, not toward it or underneath it.
- Access: Our crew needs a clear path to carry materials to the build site. Gates and passages must work for long lumber and safe walking.
- Overhead clearances: Power lines and tree branches should clear the roof peak by at least 3 feet, or 4 feet for structures over 160 square feet.
- Sun and shade: If the structure will be a workshop or studio, consider sun exposure. South- and west-facing walls receive the most heat.
- Visibility and security: Placing the structure where it is visible from your home or a neighboring property adds a layer of security.

Do I need to call 811 before site preparation?
Yes — and this is non-negotiable.
Calling 811 is free, required by law in Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, and protects you from hitting underground gas lines, electric conduits, water mains, sewer laterals, or telecommunications cables during any ground disturbance.
Call at least 48 hours, or 2 full business days, before digging or ground work begins. The 811 service will dispatch utility locators who mark the approximate path of underground lines using color-coded paint or flags.
This is not a formality. A single shovel hit on a gas line can create a life-threatening situation. Call 811 first. Every time.
What is the best surface to place my shed on?
The best foundation surface depends on your site, budget, and long-term plans for the structure. Here is how the most common options rank for our on-site beam-on-grade foundation system.
- Compacted gravel pad — our top recommendation: A 4- to 6-inch bed of 3/4″ crushed stone provides drainage, stability, and ease of preparation. Crushed stone interlocks and stays put. Extend the pad 12 inches beyond the structure footprint on all sides.
- Concrete slab — excellent for heavy use: A properly poured and leveled slab is a premium option for workshops, vehicle storage, heavy equipment, or future concrete floor plans.
- Compacted earth or bare ground — workable, but not ideal: Our foundation beams are ground-contact rated and sit on a 10-mil moisture barrier, so bare ground is structurally acceptable, but a gravel pad is strongly preferred.
- Grass or uncleared sod — not recommended: Grass traps moisture, decomposes, and creates a humid environment under the floor.
Surfaces to avoid include loose sand, round river rock, pea gravel, uncompacted fill dirt, and low-lying areas that pond water.
What foundation options do you support?
Our standard foundation is 6×6 YellaWood® pressure-treated ground-contact grade beams set on a 10-mil moisture barrier membrane. That works on most residential sites in the Tri-State area, but it is not the only option.
- Compacted gravel pad: Our recommendation for most sites. A 4- to 6-inch bed of 3/4″ crushed stone, compacted and leveled, with the pad extending 12 inches beyond the structure footprint on all sides.
- Concrete slab: If you have an existing slab or plan to pour one, we can build on it if the slab is level within 1/2 inch and sized properly for the structure.
- Concrete piers or Sonotubes: Useful for significant slope, high water tables, or code requirements for frost-depth footings. In the Cincinnati area, piers are typically set below the frost line.
- Solid concrete blocks: Precast concrete blocks can provide additional support where beam-on-grade alone is not ideal. Blocks must be set on stable, compacted ground and leveled within 1/2 inch.

Can I prepare the gravel pad myself, or should I hire someone?
Either approach works, as long as the finished pad meets our specifications.
If you are doing it yourself, a gravel pad is a manageable DIY project for many homeowners with basic tools and a free weekend.
- Mark the pad area — the structure footprint plus 12 inches on all sides.
- Strip the sod and topsoil to a depth of 4 to 6 inches, removing all organic material.
- Lay woven landscape stabilization fabric over the exposed soil to prevent weed growth and separate the gravel from the subgrade.
- Fill with 3/4″ crushed stone, also called crusher run or #57 stone at local quarries. Avoid round river rock and pea gravel.
- Spread evenly with a landscape rake and compact with a plate compactor or hand tamper.
- Level the surface using a straight 2×4 and a carpenter’s level. Check both directions.
A typical 10×16 structure pad, sized 12×18 with the 12-inch extension, requires approximately 3 to 4 cubic yards of stone.
If you hire the work out, local landscaping companies and excavation contractors routinely install gravel pads. Most can complete the job in a single day. Costs vary, but expect $500 to $1,500 depending on pad size, site conditions, and grading needs.
The pad must be level within 1/2 inch across the full footprint when our crew arrives. We handle the rest — beams, moisture barrier, and the structure itself.
How important is drainage around my shed?
Drainage is one of the top three factors in how long your structure lasts — right alongside paint maintenance and proper ventilation.
Water is a building’s primary enemy. If water pools under or around the structure, sustained moisture contact will eventually cause damage. Pressure treatment slows the process, but it does not eliminate the need for good drainage.
- Grade should slope away from the building on all sides. Even a gentle slope of 1/4 inch per foot for the first 4 to 6 feet helps direct surface water away from the foundation.
- No standing water should collect under the structure. If water pools beneath the building after rain, drainage needs correction.
- A gravel perimeter or pad should extend beyond the footprint. Our recommended 12-inch extension creates a permeable zone where splashback drains downward.
- Gutters should direct water away. Downspouts should discharge at least 3 feet from the structure, preferably onto a splash block or into a drain line.
- Organic material should not be piled against the base. Mulch, compost, leaves, and firewood hold moisture against siding and foundation components.

Do I need the leveling package?
Our standard build includes up to 6 inches of leveling at no additional charge.
Every Vintage Shed Company structure is built on 6×6 YellaWood® pressure-treated ground-contact grade beams. These beams sit 5-1/2 inches off the ground at their lowest point. Using treated leveling materials — shims, additional blocking, and graduated support — we bring the foundation beams to level within that 6-inch range as part of the standard build.
When you need the leveling package: If your site has more than 6 inches of grade change across the building footprint, but less than 12 inches, the optional leveling package handles it with additional treated lumber, extended blocking, and more labor.
When to call us before ordering: If the grade change exceeds 12 inches, standard leveling will not work. We need to discuss alternatives such as professional grading, retaining solutions, pier foundations, or another site-specific approach.
Simple slope check: Lay a straight 2×4 from the high side to the low side and measure the gap at the low end. That measurement is your grade change.
Can you still build if my yard is not level?
Yes — up to a point.
We build on sloped sites across the Tri-State area regularly. Here is the range:

Can you build on an existing concrete slab?
Yes — with a few requirements.
- The slab must be level within 1/2 inch across the full area where the structure will sit.
- The slab must be the correct size for your structure model, or slightly larger, so the full footprint of the foundation beams rests on the slab surface.
- The slab must be structurally sound. Major cracks, heaving, or deterioration must be addressed before we build.
Building on a slab requires additional labor and materials to anchor the foundation beams to the concrete. This includes concrete fasteners, treated sill seal between the beams and the slab, and added time for proper attachment. The slab-build scope will be quoted as part of your project cost.
When we build on a slab, we still install our 10-mil moisture barrier between the slab surface and the foundation beams. Concrete can wick moisture upward through capillary action, and the barrier breaks that moisture path.

Will you remove trees or an old shed from my yard?
Yes. We offer optional site clearing services, quoted separately from the structure cost.
- Tree and brush removal: Full arbor service is available if trees, branches, or heavy brush need to be cleared from the build area or material path. This is quoted case-by-case depending on scope.
- Old shed removal and disposal: If an existing structure is where you want the new build, we can demolish and haul it away. Let us know the size, condition, and materials so we can price the work accurately.
After removal, the site still needs to meet preparation requirements: level within 6 inches, or 12 inches with the leveling package, clear of debris, and with adequate perimeter and overhead clearance.
Are all shed sizes built on-site?
Every structure we build — from the smallest storage shed to the largest two-story barn — is constructed entirely on your property. No exceptions.
We do not manufacture structures in a factory and deliver them on a flatbed. We do not build them in a parking lot and crane them over your fence. We carry raw materials to your build site, and our crew — Ed and sons, with no subcontractors on structural work — frames, sheathes, sides, and roofs the structure where it stands.
- No size limitations imposed by truck width, road clearances, or gate openings.
- No transportation damage from highway vibration, uneven loading, or crane lifts.
- No compromises in framing weight or material thickness to reduce transport weight.
- Every connection, fastener, and structural joint is made on-site where our crew can inspect it in real time.

What happens if my site is not ready when your crew arrives?
If we arrive on build day and the site is not prepared — not cleared, not level within the required range, no access path, no power, overhead obstructions, standing water, or unmarked utilities — we have a few options, none of them ideal.
- Minor issues: A few branches, light debris, or a slightly overgrown path may be handled on the spot if severity and time allow.
- Moderate issues: Significant clearing, grade problems, or access obstructions may require delaying and rescheduling the build. If the delay is due to homeowner-responsible site conditions, a rescheduling fee may apply.
- Major issues: If the site is unusable — buried in brush, holding standing water, missing utility markings, or physically inaccessible — the build cannot proceed.

What if it rains on my scheduled build day?
Because every structure is built on-site in your yard — not in a climate-controlled factory — weather is a real scheduling variable.
- Light rain or overcast skies: We can usually work through drizzle or light intermittent rain if conditions are safe.
- Heavy rain, storms, or lightning: We do not build. Safety comes first for our crew and for the quality of your structure.
- Regional weather impacts: We serve a broad Tri-State area. Weather in one part of the service region can affect the schedule even if your yard is clear.
If weather forces a delay, we will notify you as soon as possible and reschedule for the next available date. We do not charge rescheduling fees for weather delays.
Most builds complete in a single day, but keeping a backup day in mind reduces frustration if weather does not cooperate.
Can my shed be moved after it is built?
Technically, yes. The structure sits on 6×6 foundation beams that can be lifted and relocated. Structurally, the building can be raised with jacks and moved.
Practically, we do not recommend it. Moving the structure after installation voids the warranty.
Our 30-year structural warranty covers a structure built on a prepared site with a properly leveled foundation and a 10-mil moisture barrier in place. When the structure is lifted and moved, the foundation system is dismantled, the moisture barrier may be left behind or damaged, and the beams are reset on a new surface that may not be level, stable, or protected.
We cannot warrant the structural integrity of a building that has been removed from its prepared foundation and placed on an unknown surface. If you anticipate needing to relocate the structure later, tell us before the build so we can discuss foundation approaches that make future relocation less disruptive, though the warranty limitation still applies.

This warranty reflects our confidence in how we build: 2×6 kiln-dried framing, 3/4″ seven-ply PT plywood subfloor, pressure-treated sheathing throughout, and hurricane-tied roof systems do not fail when they are built right and properly maintained.
10-Year Limited Materials Warranty
This covers the building materials used in construction — lumber, fasteners, sheathing, and other components — against manufacturing defects for 10 years from the date of completion.
1-Year Workmanship Labor Warranty

What can void my warranty?
Warranties protect against defects in materials and workmanship. They do not cover damage caused by neglect, misuse, or failure to maintain the structure. Here is what can void or limit your coverage:
- Failing to paint the exterior within 30 days of completion: This is the most common warranty issue we see. The factory primer on LP SmartSide® is a temporary base coat, not a finished exterior. Leaving it exposed leads to UV degradation, moisture penetration, and siding damage — none of which are manufacturing defects. The paint requirement is a warranty condition, not a suggestion.
- Neglecting routine maintenance: Caulk that cracks and is not replaced. Paint that peels and is not touched up. Vegetation growing against the base of the structure. Sprinklers hitting the siding daily. Mulch or firewood piled against the walls. These are maintenance failures that introduce moisture — and moisture is what destroys wood buildings.
- Unauthorized structural modifications: Cutting into the wall framing, removing hurricane ties, altering the roof structure, or making changes to the foundation can compromise the structural system. If damage results, the warranty does not cover it.

If the issue falls under your 1-year workmanship warranty, we come back and fix it at no cost. If it is a structural issue covered by the 30-year structural warranty, we assess and address it. If it is a manufacturer component issue involving siding, shingles, or windows, we help you navigate the manufacturer’s warranty claim process and coordinate the repair.
If the issue is maintenance-related — paint failure due to delayed painting, moisture damage from piled mulch, or similar — we will still help you diagnose the problem and recommend the right fix. We would rather help you address it correctly than have you make it worse.

What maintenance does my structure need to stay in good condition?
Think of your Vintage Shed Company structure the way you think of your house — it is built with the same quality of materials and framing, and it responds to the same maintenance principles. The difference is scale. A shed is smaller, so the maintenance takes less time. But skipping it has the same consequences: moisture damage, premature aging, and costly repairs.
Here is the maintenance your structure needs, organized by frequency:
Within 30 days of completion, critical:
- Paint all exterior surfaces — siding, trim, doors on all six sides, and all exposed siding edges including bottoms — with two coats of 100% acrylic latex exterior paint in a satin or semi-gloss finish.
- Caulk all joints, seams, and panel connections with exterior acrylic latex caulk before painting.
- Fill all nail holes and visible knots with exterior wood putty before painting.
Every spring, annual inspection:
- Walk the perimeter. Look for cracked or separated caulk, peeling paint, damaged trim, and any gaps where moisture could enter.
- Clear vegetation from the base of the structure. Grass, weeds, and ornamental plantings should be kept at least 6 inches from the siding at all times. Plants trap moisture against the walls and create conditions for decay.
- Inspect the roof. Check for missing, cracked, or lifted shingles. Look at the drip edge and overhangs for debris buildup.
- Clean gutters if installed. Clogged gutters direct water back against the building instead of away from it.
- Lubricate all locksets, hinges, and hardware with a spray lubricant.
- Check the foundation perimeter. Confirm that the moisture barrier is intact and that soil or mulch has not been pushed against or over the beams.
Every 1–2 years, touch-up maintenance:
- Re-caulk any joints showing cracks, separation, or shrinkage.
- Touch up any paint chips, scuffs, or bare spots — especially on south- and west-facing walls, bottom siding edges, and door edges.
- Inspect under the structure, if accessible, for any signs of standing water, pest activity, or moisture barrier displacement.
Every 5–7 years, full repaint cycle:
- Plan a full exterior repaint — clean, caulk, and apply two fresh coats. A well-maintained initial paint job will last 5–7 years before this is needed.
Year-round habits:
- Do not pile mulch, dirt, firewood, or debris against the walls. These materials hold moisture against the siding and accelerate decay faster than any other single factor.
- Do not let sprinklers spray the structure. Adjust irrigation heads to clear the walls by at least 3 feet.
- Be careful with string trimmers and mowers near the base. Impact damage to the bottom edge of the siding creates a moisture entry point.
- Keep the interior ventilated. On dry days, open windows or doors to let air circulate. Stagnant air inside a closed structure promotes condensation, mold, and musty odors.
This is not a long list. Most of it is observation — walking around the structure once a season and addressing small issues before they become expensive ones.
How do I prevent moisture problems inside my shed?
Moisture is the single biggest threat to any outdoor structure — and it comes from more sources than most people realize. Rain is obvious. But ground moisture, condensation, humidity from stored items, and even your own breathing inside a closed shed all contribute.
Outside the structure:
- Keep vegetation 6 inches or more from the base. Plants trap moisture and block airflow at the foundation level.
- Do not pile anything organic against the walls — mulch, firewood, leaves, or compost.
- Ensure the ground around the structure slopes away from the foundation so water drains outward instead of pooling underneath.
- Do not let sprinklers hit the building. Redirect irrigation heads to clear the walls by at least 3 feet.
- Make sure gutters, if installed, are clear and directing water away from the foundation.
Inside the structure:
- Open doors or windows on dry days to let fresh air circulate. A closed, unventilated structure builds humidity.
- If the structure is insulated, ensure ventilation is installed and functioning — especially in the roof cavity.
- Do not store wet items inside. A soaked tarp, damp firewood, or freshly washed truck cover releases moisture into the enclosed air space.
- For conditioned spaces, consider a small dehumidifier during humid months. Keep interior humidity below 60% to prevent mold growth.
- If you notice morning condensation on windows, tools, or metal surfaces — even when it has not rained — that is an airflow problem. Add ventilation before it becomes a structural problem.
At the structure level:
- Maintain the paint and caulk on the exterior. These are your primary moisture barriers. When paint peels or caulk cracks, moisture enters the wall cavity.
- The 10-mil moisture barrier we install under the foundation prevents ground moisture from wicking into the floor system. Do not disturb it. If you see it exposed at the perimeter, that is intentional — the 12-inch extension beyond the footprint protects the base from splashback.
Most moisture problems in backyard structures are preventable. The structures that develop rot, mold, or decay are almost always structures that were neglected — not structures that were poorly built.
How do I protect my structure from pests?
The materials we use provide built-in resistance to the two most common structural pests.
- LP SmartSide® siding is treated with zinc borate through the SmartGuard® process, which resists termite damage at the material level. Termites that attempt to feed on the siding encounter a mineral compound that is toxic to them.
- Pressure-treated lumber throughout the floor system and wall sheathing contains preservatives that resist both fungal decay and insect damage.
That said, no material is completely pest-proof if the environment invites infestation. Here is what you can do to minimize risk:
- Keep the perimeter clear: Mulch, firewood, leaf debris, and compost piled against the structure create a bridge for termites and carpenter ants from the ground to the siding. Maintain at least 6 inches of clearance on all sides — 12 inches is better.
- Eliminate ground contact where possible: The foundation beams are ground-contact rated and sit on a moisture barrier, but nothing else should touch bare ground. Do not lean untreated wood, cardboard boxes, or organic material against the base.
- Seal entry points: Mice and other rodents can enter through gaps as small as 1/4 inch. During your annual inspection, check around doors, vents, and any utility penetrations for gaps. Seal them with steel wool backed by expanding foam or caulk.
- Watch for signs: Mud tubes running up the foundation beams indicate termite activity. Sawdust piles near the base suggest carpenter ants. Gnaw marks on door bottoms or stored items point to rodents. Address any signs promptly — early intervention prevents structural damage.
If you are in a high-risk termite zone, including parts of Southern Kentucky and Southern Indiana, consider a professional termite inspection as part of your annual maintenance routine.
Can I insulate my structure?
Yes — and because we frame with 2×6 studs at 16 inches on center, your wall cavities are already sized for standard residential insulation without any modification.
Wall insulation:
Our 2×6 stud cavities accept R-19 fiberglass batt insulation — the same insulation used in residential exterior walls in the Cincinnati climate zone. R-19 is the recommended insulation value for conditioned spaces in Zone 4, which includes Greater Cincinnati. By comparison, a shed framed with 2×4 studs maxes out at R-13, which is insufficient for a heated or cooled workspace.
Install fiberglass or mineral wool batts between studs. Cut them to fit snugly without compressing — compressed insulation loses thermal performance. Install a 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier on the warm side, which is the interior side, of the insulation to prevent condensation inside the wall cavity.
Roof and ceiling insulation:
This is where most DIY insulation projects go wrong — and where the consequences are the most severe.
Never fill the entire rafter cavity with batt insulation. You must leave an air channel between the top of the insulation and the underside of the roof sheathing for ventilation.
Without this air gap, warm moist air from inside the structure condenses on the cold roof deck, saturates the insulation, and begins rotting the sheathing from the inside. This is not a theoretical risk — it is the most common insulation failure in backyard structures.
For roof insulation, the best approach for most homeowners is:
- Install rigid foam board, such as XPS or polyisocyanurate, beneath the roof deck while maintaining a minimum 1.5″ to 3.5″ air gap between the insulation and the sheathing.
- Add ridge and eave vents to create passive airflow through that gap — warm air exits at the ridge, and cooler air enters at the eaves.
- If desired, install a finished drop ceiling with a ventilated cavity above it.
Floor insulation:
If you plan to use the structure as a conditioned space, such as a heated office or climate-controlled studio, insulating the floor prevents heat loss downward through the subfloor. Rigid foam board installed between the floor joists is the most practical approach.

Why does insulation require ventilation — and what happens if I skip it?
Think of insulation and ventilation as a team. Insulation controls temperature. Ventilation controls moisture. One without the other creates more problems than having neither.
Here is the physics in plain terms: warm air holds more moisture than cold air. When warm, humid air inside your insulated structure hits a cold surface — like the underside of a roof deck in winter — the moisture in that air condenses into liquid water. If the insulation is packed tight against that cold surface with no air gap, there is nowhere for the moisture to go. It saturates the insulation, which destroys its thermal performance, soaks the roof sheathing, which starts the rot cycle, and creates a hidden mold problem you will not discover until the damage is advanced.
Proper ventilation breaks this cycle by keeping air moving through the roof cavity. Ridge vents at the peak and eave vents at the base create a passive convection loop — warm air rises and exits at the top, drawing cooler dry air in at the bottom. That continuous airflow carries moisture out of the cavity before it has a chance to condense.
The takeaway: Insulate the walls as much as you want. But never insulate the roof without installing ventilation first.

Yes — and you should do it before the build is complete, not after.
Most homeowner’s insurance policies cover detached structures, often called “other structures” in standard policy language, up to a percentage of your dwelling coverage — typically 10% of the value of your home. Transparency is how we operate — here is every item that is not part of the standard build price:
- Exterior paint. Structures are delivered primed, not painted. Paint is available through our professional paint service, sold separately, or applied by the homeowner within 30 days.
- Floor coating. Floor paint or epoxy is the homeowner’s responsibility.
- Interior finishing. Insulation, drywall, interior paint, and interior trim are not included. The structure is framed and sheathed — ready for interior finishing if desired.
- Electrical work. All electrical work, including outlets, lighting, subpanel, and HVAC circuits, requires a licensed electrician and a separate electrical permit. We do not perform electrical work.
- Permits. The homeowner is responsible for obtaining all required permits. Our optional permit coordination service is available for an additional fee.
- Engineered drawings. $750 if required by your jurisdiction. Billed separately after purchase.
- Leveling beyond 6 inches. Our optional leveling package handles grades of 6 to 12 inches for an additional fee.
- Site grading, gravel pads, or concrete work. Ground preparation beyond standard beam placement is the homeowner’s responsibility or available as a quoted add-on.
- Tree removal, old shed removal, or site clearing. Available as optional services, quoted separately.
- Generator fee. $150 if no power outlet is available within 150 feet of the build site.

Yes — anything beyond the standard inclusions listed in the standard build specification is priced separately. The base price on our site reflects the standard build specification for each model.
Available options and upgrades include additional windows, alternative door configurations, lofts, workbenches, built-in shelving, ramps, shutters, flower boxes, cupolas, and other architectural accessories. Each option is fully described with images and pricing on our Options & Upgrades page.
If you want to add options, do it before your build date. Our crew brings all materials for the standard build plus any options you have selected. Adding options on build day is not possible — the materials will not be on-site.
What is the typical lead time from purchase to build?
Installation is typically scheduled within 2 to 4 weeks of purchase, weather permitting. During peak seasons, especially spring and early summer, lead times may extend to 4 to 6 weeks.
Here is the general timeline:
- Day of purchase: You will hear from Ed before the close of business to begin scheduling. If you called, texted, or emailed during business hours, expect a same-day response.
- Within 1–3 days: Your build date is confirmed based on crew availability, weather forecast, and your schedule.
- Two days before build: You will receive a confirmation call verifying your order details, build date, and estimated arrival time.
- Build day: Our crew arrives at the scheduled time with all materials loaded. You will receive an updated arrival call so you are not waiting around wondering.
All dates are subject to change due to weather — we build outdoors, and safety always takes priority over the calendar. If a delay occurs, you are notified as soon as possible and rescheduled for the next available date at no additional cost.

Will your crew confirm the build date before they arrive?
Yes — two confirmation touchpoints before build day:
- Two days before your scheduled build: You will receive a call confirming your order details, the build date, and the planned arrival time. This is also the time to ask any last-minute questions about site preparation.
- Morning of build day: You will receive an updated arrival time call so you know exactly when our crew will be on-site. We respect your time — no four-hour “arrival windows.”
If weather or other circumstances force a schedule change, you will hear from us as soon as we know — not the morning of.
How long does the on-site build take?
Build time depends on the model size, complexity, and site conditions. Here is what to expect:
- Structures under 120 sq ft: 2 to 3 days for a complete build — foundation through roofing.
- Mid-size structures from 120 to 200 sq ft: 3 to 4 days.
- Large structures over 200 sq ft and two-story models: 4 to 6 days.

Do I need to be home during the build?
You do not need to be on-site for the entire build. But we need an adult, 18 or older, present at two key moments:
At the start — to confirm placement.
Before we lay the first beam, we walk the site with you to confirm exactly where the structure goes, where the door faces, and that the position matches what you approved. This takes 10 to 15 minutes. It is the last chance to adjust placement before construction begins.
At the end — for the final walkthrough.
When the build is complete, Ed walks you through the finished structure. We review every detail: door operation, window function, roofing, siding, trim, and overall fit and finish. We hand over all warranty documentation — structural, materials, and manufacturer component warranties. You inspect the work, ask questions, and confirm you are satisfied before we leave.
Between those two points, you are welcome to watch, ask questions, go to work, or go about your day. What happens during the post-build walkthrough?
The walkthrough is the final step of every build — and it is one of the most important.
Once construction is complete, Ed walks you through the finished structure, inside and out. Here is what gets reviewed:
- Exterior inspection: Siding alignment and finish, trim fit, roofing quality, drip edge, shingle line, and overall exterior appearance.
- Doors and windows: Operation, alignment, latch function, and weather seal. Doors should open and close smoothly with no binding. Windows should lock securely.
- Interior inspection: Framing visibility if unfinished, floor surface, wall sheathing, and overall interior condition.
- Foundation: Beam placement, moisture barrier visibility at the perimeter, and leveling.
- Warranty documentation: You receive all warranty paperwork — our 30-year structural warranty, the 10-year materials warranty, the 1-year workmanship warranty, and all manufacturer component warranties.
- Maintenance requirements: Ed reviews the 30-day paint requirement and key maintenance expectations so nothing gets missed.

How do I read shed dimensions on your website?
Shed dimensions follow a standard industry format: Width × Depth × Peak Height.
- Width, first number: The measurement across the door side of the structure — the wall where the door is located.
- Depth, second number: The measurement from the door wall to the back wall.
- Peak height, third number: The interior measurement from the floor surface to the highest point of the roof — the ridge.
So a structure listed as 10 × 12 × 9 is 10 feet wide on the door side, 12 feet deep from front to back, and 9 feet tall at the peak of the roof.
A few things to know about these measurements:
- Dimensions listed are nominal. Actual exterior dimensions may vary by ±2 inches due to framing, siding thickness, and trim overlap. This is standard in all construction and is noted in your purchase documentation.
- Wall height is different from peak height. Wall height is the straight vertical wall before the roof pitch begins. It determines how much usable vertical space you have along the sides of the structure. Peak height is only reached at the center ridge. If wall height matters to you — and it does for workshops, shelving, and overhead storage — ask about it for your specific model.
- Exterior vs. interior dimensions matter. The listed dimensions are exterior. Interior usable space will be slightly smaller due to wall thickness, including 2×6 framing at 5.5 inches per wall, plus sheathing and siding. For a 10-foot-wide structure, expect approximately 8 feet 10 inches of interior width.

Is there a limit to how many windows I can add?
There are practical and structural limits — and they vary by model.
The general rule: Windows can be placed in every other wall section, meaning the space between studs or structural panels. This means a longer wall can accommodate more windows than a shorter one, and the total window count depends on the model’s wall length and framing layout.
Where windows can go:
- Side walls on both sides.
- Rear wall.
- Gable ends, which are the triangular sections above the wall line on gable-roof models.
- Some models support windows flanking the door wall, depending on door width and framing configuration.
Structural constraints:
Each window opening requires a header — a structural beam above the opening that transfers the roof load around the window. Headers require space between openings for the load path to work. That is why the every-other-wall-section rule exists. Back-to-back window openings with no structural panel between them would compromise the wall’s load-bearing capacity.
Code considerations:
Window placement may also be affected by local building codes, particularly setback-related restrictions. If your structure sits close to a property line, some jurisdictions limit or prohibit window openings on the wall facing that line for fire separation and privacy. For future conversion:
If you plan to use the structure as a conditioned workspace, such as an office, studio, or workshop, at least one window must meet egress requirements — typically a minimum of 5.7 square feet of openable area, with specific height and width minimums. Planning this during the design phase is far easier than retrofitting later.

Can I add upgrades to my structure after it is already built?

After the build, possible but more expensive:
Adding features after construction requires a return visit, additional materials, and in some cases modification of existing framing. A window added after sheathing and siding are installed requires cutting through the wall, reframing the opening with a header, flashing the perimeter, and patching the siding — substantially more labor and material than installing the window during the original build.
Some upgrades are straightforward to add later — shelving, hooks, ramps, and cosmetic accessories. Others — windows, doors, lofts, and any modification that affects the structural frame — are significantly more cost-effective when included from the start.
Rule of thumb: If you are debating whether to include an upgrade now or add it later, include it now. The material cost is the same, but the labor cost is almost always lower during the original build.
